Dog - Benefits Of Dog Kennel-Does All Dogs Need It

Getting a dog kennel is not a must for all dogs, however having one can be beneficial if the dog are not enclosed in a fenced yard. Buying a dog kennel is less expensive than the cost of fencing an entire yard, making these structures invaluable to people who would like to permit their dogs to run outside, but who can not afford the expense of an entire fence.

Other than being a less expensive method of providing an area for the dog to run, a dog kennel can also be a part of responsible dog ownership that provides benefits to the dog, to the owner, and to their neighborhood as well. The outdoor dog kennel can be used to:

? Provide protection to "intact" (unspayed) bitches,
? To prevent fights between the owner's dogs and neighborhood dogs, and to
? Protect the neighbors and other people from dog aggression

Although it is a responsible act to spay or neuter your intact pets, some people purposefully do not do so. These people are often breeders of dogs for conformation shows or are people that exhibit dogs in such shows. Because it is not permissible to spay or neuter dogs that are entered in such shows, these individuals must find a way to contain their intact dogs, particularly in the case of a bitch in heat.

It is important to note, however, that the dog owner still must maintain awareness of the bitch in question. Even kennels with six-foot tall walls are not entirely safe when a bitch is in heat; dogs have been known to scale fences that high, particularly when chain link provides footholds for the climb.

In addition to providing protection for intact bitches, a dog kennel can prevent fights between the owner's dogs and the neighborhood dogs. This feat is accomplished by preventing the owner's dogs from roaming into other dog's territory by virtue of them being confined.

In addition, neighborhood dogs that are free to roam can not start fights on the dog owner's property if his or her own dogs are confined. This confinement has an added benefit: if neighborhood dogs are targeted by animal control, either for roaming or for aggression, the dog owner with a kennel is freed of concern over his or her dog being picked up as a transgressor.

Finally, not every dog is a friendly one when strangers come onto "his" (or "her") property. Dogs are by nature territorial. For this reason, if a dog does not know someone coming up the walk, then that person might be in danger of being attacked if the dog is running loose. An outdoor kennel also goes a long way to preventing the family dog from coming to harm from, or from being stolen by, passing strangers.

Dog - Solutions to Dog Fear Based Problems and Territory Marking

We devoted a prior article to DOG MARKING CODES - TERRITORY MARKING AND SCENT MIXING. There we explained how such behavior is used in wolf packs, and how domestic dogs imitate such behavior when they feel threatened. Excessive dog marking and rolling in dung are frequently signs of a dog's insecurity.

Territory marking builds the dog's confidence. Ugh! But don't despair. There are methods for correcting dog marking behaviors and other fearful dog behaviors. There are more socially acceptable means of building confidence!

For example, take regular walks . . . EVERY DAY! Daily walks or runs put people in a situation where they can make the animal face its fears. It is also important for you, the owner, to control when the animal relieves itself, which begins control of excessive marking. Don't let Butch mark every tree and bush!

Further, bonding with people also intensifies through daily dog walking. When dogs are walked or run under disciplined circumstances, they feel useful and secure, and in the process lose much of their obsession with claiming and guarding one place.

Walks are instinctively familiar to the dogs. In the wild, the whole pack changes its primary area each summer and winter. Tension rises up from boredom and restlessness if the pack stays too long in one place. So the Alpha male will take the pack on a territorial run, up to 50 miles a night, during the time when the pack shifts areas.

Your domestic dog is really only a short step away from being wild and still has such dog pack instincts. He needs to expand the territory he visits and to walk and run! Without this need met, he like the wolf will suffer from boredom, pent-up energy, and lack of apparent purpose, and may develop destructive or aggressive tendencies. Fear and uncertainty can set in, along with possessiveness of his territory and fear of interference with it or with him. Territory marking or rolling in dung may be unpleasant results.

Many people try to cure fear-based marking through petting and pampering their insecure pet. THAT DOES NOT WORK! Certainly, I love to give affection to my dogs, and I frequently do. However, they never receive it at the wrong time, and I do not use it to address fear-based behaviors.

When my puppy, who was extreme in everything, would show fear of something, I would lead her through a step-by-step process. For example, the puppy feared bicycles. Here is what I did.

First I walked her a short way on a leash to a place we often passed but had not yet explored. The lack of familiarity with the place prevented her going into a hyperactive state of mind. She was more in tune with me, because that was not her territory.

Then I would bring the pup near a bike and allow her to smell it. If she barked or became excited, I would calmly but firmly remove her from it. When she calmed down, I would bring her back. We repeated step one over and over again until she was where I wanted her.

Sometimes the dog puts up a tantrum, but she will finally submit. Be consistent and persistent! It always pays off.

Step #2 is to have a friend ride the bike in circles around us, at a fair distance, and then gradually lead the pup toward it. The first time, this needs to be a bike with which the pup is familiar. Again, you should remove her if she becomes excited or wants to fight it. With perseverance and repetition, you will succeed, and her fear of the bike will eventually go away.

Dog - My Santa Is My Owner And She Lets Me Write Down My Wishes This Christmas

When I first heard Audrey Hepburn sing "These are a few of my favorite things" in the evergreen movie " My fair Lady", I never thought I'd have an occasion to present my own list some day. But you know what they say, "Every dog ahs his day", and I got mine too. This Christmas, my dear owner in my eyes, is no less beautiful than Audrey. Hepburn herself, has asked me for a list of 10 things that I want. And God! I can't wait to get started.

? The first and foremost thing I want is to have my own bean bag, in front of the television. With my own Bean Bag, I can be a part of the prime time audience.

? I also want to have my own car and a driver, so that I can go for long drives as and when I want. Oh what fun would it be, to just hop on to the back seat of a convertible, have the wind blowing in my face and to have no one pushing me to the extreme corner of the car seat. I can't wait to lie back and say to myself, "Now that's the way to live!!!

? One thing I always dream of is to have a cupboard full of dog bones, in all flavors - chicken, pork, mutton, egg and even fish!!! I can chew on it all day and treat my palate to my heart's leisure. That's called getting a real taste of life!!!!

? Another thing that has always been a secret passion for me is to have cat in my captivity. But something tells me, this wish of mine will remain a wish considering my owner goes "Oh chooo chweet" every time she sees a cat at her window still, sitting majestically - much to my rising blood pressure !!!

? One thing I have always dreamt doing is to fly first class. After all, my owner has always made me feel that I deserve the best!!! I would love to lie back in the comfy cozy chairs I see in the television ads, be served chicken/mutton soup, with chop lambs and a jug of my favorite milk that I can keep lapping up while admiring the clouds and the sky outside. I would love to be on cloud nine literally, this X'mas.

? I also want a nice big bed all to myself. Even though I have been provided a decent bed and I am practically the master of the whole house (at least my owner tells me so), I still would love to have a master bed, where I can sleep without having to worry about stretching too much. Sometimes, I feel I don't manage to catch the other dogs and cats in my dreams, because I don't have that much of space to run while dreaming.

? I also desperately need a mobile phone. You might not believe me, but I do have quite a few local friends. They are cool dudes and it's nice to meet them when I go for my walks. But there are times when I'm getting bored in the house. No cat or mouse in the house to hold my attention and no maids or squirrels to bark at. That's when you feel like just calling up your friends.

? I would love to have my own personal shrink. There are so many things I want him to analyze for me, especially my dreams. I want to know why I only dream to cats and dogs and chasing them unsuccessfully all over town. I wonder if I have any karmic debts to settle with them or is it just my ID, my ego or the super ego that is causing me so much of heartburn.

? You might find this funny but I would also love to have a skateboard for myself. You know how it is. Sometimes you just feel so tired. I do want to go out for a walk, but I somehow don't have the energy to walk. At such to just step on to the skateboard and look around. Now that would be a real smooth walk, don't you think????

? And last, but not the least, I would like to have my own ATM card. There are times when you feel like indulging in something particular, but my owner does not understand exactly what I want. That's when I feel my ATM card would be very useful. I can just go and withdraw money and head straight for the nearest dog store and buy whatever goodies I feel like eating. With time I might even cajole my owner to get me my own credit card. I have seen how easy it becomes when you have one. Then I can got o the jazziest dog store and have a blast.

Come to think of it, my list can go on and on, but I have been told to stop at 10 things for now. I can't wait for December and the jingle bells ringing. With my wish list all set for my very own Santa Clause, I have already started my countdown. I am going to be the happiest dog this Christmas with all my wishes set to be fulfilled. And all those who love my kind and me, please come forward and join me in chorus to say "Amen" to that. Soon, I shall call all of you from my mobile and thank you all personally for all your good wishes. Merry X'mas!
